Sleep All Summer

Jarvis Cocker (der Sänger von Pulp) hat eine Radioshow bei der BBC: Jarvis Cocker's Sunday Service. Letzten Sonntag übernahm ausnahmsweise der Schriftsteller Nick Hornby (High Fidelity, About A Boy usw.) für ihn.

Es stellte sich heraus, dass Hornby nicht nur letztes Jahr mit Ben Folds zusammengearbeitet hat (das Album, für das Folds die Musik und Hornby die Texte schrieb, heißt Lonely Avenue), sondern auch The National mag. Oder zumindest Matt Berningers Stimme.

Hornby spielte "Sleep All Summer" und gab uns einen kleinen Eindruck davon, woher seine Inspiration für neue Geschichten kommt (angehende Schriftsteller, merkt auf!). Er sagte das Folgende über "Sleep All Summer" (ich habe den Text vom Internetstream abgeschrieben, daher sind alle Fehler mein Unvermögen und die eher laxe Sprache ist natürlich darauf zurückzuführen, dass es sich um einen gesprochenen Text handelt, ich habe auch einen kleinen Abschnitt weggelassen, der nach dem Lied kam):

Yeah, this next song. Not many people have heard it, I don't think. It's a collaboration between The National and St. Vincent, Annie St. Vincent. It's a song called "Sleep All Summer" which was originally recorded by a band called Crooked Fingers. And it's the most beautiful song and fantastic combination of voices as well. That guy out of The National's . . . what is it? Baritone? The song is a sort of classic pop song, it almost sounds like a French "chanson", I think. It's got a lovely languid feel to it.
I've had this song on my brain for about a year or so, I think. And I like the title and the song so much that I'm trying to work on a screenplay with the same title. Partly, because I want people to hear the song and that could play on the credits.



"Sleep All Summer" I wrote, because I wanted to work with Rosamund Pike who was in a film I wrote before called "An Education". And I was so bowled over by her performance, as a "comedienne" basically in that film, which I had never seen her do, that I wanted to write a lead part for her. So I'm kind of half way through this process. It's kind of a "growing up romantic comedy", but who knows if any of these things will ever see the light of day. I'd like the guy wrote the song to make some money. This band Crooked Fingers, I think they're pretty good
and he's a great songwriter, so maybe one day . . .


An Education hat eine kleine Kontroverse hervorgerufen, aber ich fand ihn recht gut. Vornehmlich wegen Carey Mulligan, die so gut spielt, dass man von der Naivität und Oberflächlichkeit der Figur nicht abgeschreckt ist, sondern mitfühlt.

Carey Mulligan ist für mich wirklich eine der besten Schauspielerinnen der letzten Jahre, einfach deswegen, weil sie 2 Filme mehr oder weniger im Alleingang gerettet hat, die von der Story/vom Plot her wirklich hart an der Grenze zum sentimentalen Kitsch waren, die aber beide funktioniert haben, weil sie so überzeugend war: An Education und Never Let Me Go (Alles, was wir geben mussten). An Education hatte außerdem den Vorteil, dass Peter Sarsgaard aus Garden State den Part des "Verführers" spielte. Und seit Garden State kann Sarsgaard in meinen Augen sowieso nichts mehr falsch machen, aber auch seine Leistung hat ein potenzielles Desaster verhindert. Damit der Film funktioniert, durfte David nicht zu schleimig, nicht zu "dick aufgetragen" sein, und das hat Sarsgaard ganz hervorragend hinbekommen.

Anyways, zurück zu "Sleep All Summer": Falls demnächst ein Film rauskommt, der auf einem Script von Nick Hornby basiert und der eine ähnliche Story hat, wisst ihr, woher die Inspiration kam!
